Dataset Title Gazetteer of southern Africa ?
Abstract The Gazetteer of southern Africa was derived from the country gazetteers of the GeoNames geographical database (available for download free of charge under a creative commons attribution license). It contains 376,532 geographical names of populated places and alternate names. All features are categorized into one out of nine feature classes and further subcategorized into one out of 645 feature codes. GeoNames is integrating geographical data such as names of places in various languages, elevation, population and others from various sources. The data includes Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Eswatini, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Lineage Statement The southern African Gazetteer was derived from the text files downloaded for every southern African country from the GeoNames database (http://www.geonames.org/). Data was converted to GIS format, replaced missing data with -9999; removed clearly misplaced or wrongly located points, and combined into one geographical file. ?
