Title NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) for 2023/24 in southern Africa (Map of the Month) ?
Author SASSCAL ?
Abstract Much of Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe showed areas of below average greenness for the 2023/24 rainfall year, but in particular the NDVI for most of Namibia showed below average greenness for the 2023/24 rainfall year. The NDVI of the western and southern parts of the Cape of South Africa suggest above normal greenness for the 2023/24 rainfall year. In average annual NDVI of Angola and South Africa of 2023/24, compared to the historic average (2001/02 to 2022/23) suggests above average greenness, but for Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe, the average annual NDVI suggests below average greenness. Namibia and Zambia have experienced two consecutive years with below average annual greenness, corresponding to two consecutive drought years. The average monthly NDVI of Namibia was below the respective monthly average throughout the season, with Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe still suggesting an average greenness at the start of the season, but then experiencing a below average greenness as the season progressed. ?
