Abstract |
The main purpose of the study was to create a database of the Chiroptera specimens hosted in Museum of Ornithology and Mammalogy of Lubango (MOML) in order to develop a management system for the collection, making it available to the academic and scientific community. A review of chiropterofauna of Angola from other sources of information was undertaken, including data from international museums, GBIF and available bibliography. The Chiroptera collection comprises 247 records, ordered in 6 families, 16 genera and 24 species, representing mainly the Western region of the country, particularly the Southwest. 7 specimens belonging to the genera Epomophorus and Tadarida remained unidentified at the species level. The Nycteridae family is the most represented in number of specimens (81 - 32.8%), Pteropodidae has the greatest diversity in number of genera (6 – 37,5%) and species (7 – 29,2%) and Emballonuridae is the least represented in terms of geographical distribution. The information gattered from other museums highlighted the lack of data for approximately half of the country, particularly the Northeast and Southeast regions. Accordingly, the knowledge of this group of mammals is quite incomplete in Angola, making it necessary to conduct surveys and studies in the identified areas. This information was used to produce an illustrated brochure with pictures and data on bats of Angola, available in MOML. Using a clear and direct language, it was emphazised their ecological importance and the economic and environmental benefits they provide. |
