Abstract |
The tiger beetle fauna of Angola is one of the most diverse in the Afrotropical Region, with 96 taxa (81 species plus 15 non-nominate subspecies) currently known from the country. Despite this diversity, the fauna is still poorly known due to a variety of factors. The majority of tiger beetle species occurring in Angola also occur throughout central and southern Africa; however, some species appear to have more restricted distributions. Currently, 36 (36.5%) of the taxa recorded from Angola are endemic to the country. The most speciose genus in Angola is Dromica Dejean, 1826, of which 24 species in the subgenera Dromica, Foveodromica Cassola, 2002, and Pseudodromica Cassola, 2002 have been recorded in the country. During November–December 2015, a collecting trip to Angola resulted in the capture of two species of the subtribe Dromicina and 22 species of the subtribe Cicindelina. One of them, Cylindera (Eugrapha) dissimilis, represents a new subgenus and species record for Angola and increase to 97 the number of tiger beetle species known from Angola. Two additional subspecies, Ophryodera rufomarginata bradshawi P´eringuey, 1888 and Ophryodera rufomarginata richteri, previously recorded from Angola based on doubletons, were found again, confirming their occurrence in Angola and augmenting knowledge of their distribution in the country. The Dromica species collected on this trip will be the subject of a future work. |
