Abstract We determined resource utilisation and habitat preference by large mammals in relation to fire history in a semi-arid woodland savannah in Namibia. The study was conducted in the Waterberg Plateau Park which is an important centre for the breeding and conservation of important large herbivores including black and white rhino, buffalo, roan and sable. The vegetation occurs on dystrophic sandy soils and hence the nutrition of the large mammals is compromised. Currently a policy of no burn is followed. Any observed accidental anthropogenic or naturally induced fires are allowed to burn blocks of approximately 2000 hectares in size and no further. Transects were laid out in blocks burnt 2.3. 15 and 25 years ago in a space-for-time substitution study. In each transect, grass and woody vegetation utilisation was determined by counting the proportion of each species utilised. In addition we determined the relative presence of large mammal species in the same blocks of fire history by counting dung along the same transects. The same measurements were repeated the following year along the same transects. ?
