Title Using ecological factors to predict risk areas for large carnivore predation on livestock around Makgadikgadi/Nxai Pan National Park, Botswana (Master thesis) ?
Author Kefentse M. Mogwera ?
Abstract Large wild mammalian carnivore predation on livestock especially near wildlife protected areas (PAs) has amplified human-carnivore conflict (HCC) globally and is a major livelihood and conservation concern. Predation on livestock and the associated retaliatory killings are controversial realities because livestock killed is of high value to the owners’ socio-economic well-being while the concerned carnivores are usually legally protected for their ecological and economic value. Although different mitigation strategies are suggested worldwide, the problem persists owing to inadequate understanding of ecological factors that influence and potentially determine local patterns of predation on livestock. Predictive spatial risk modeling has lately evolved a tool to predict and produce visual guide maps to distinguish high from low-risk areas to eventually identify and prioritize conflict areas where appropriate mitigation efforts should be directed. ?
