Abstract Lichens in Namibia covers both the savanna and the Namib Desert. Lichens of the savanna are poorly studied. Lichens are pioneers, occupying the ecological niche that most high plants are not able to inhabit. They are important for the environment because they are good indicator of air pollution. With the growing use of digital cameras that allow us to monitor vegetation changes, photosynthetic activities of lichens can be monitored using the near infra-red camera and vegetation indices can be calculated. The near infra-red camera was tested on three species of lichens in the National Botanical Garden. Time series images were taken at the interval of 20 minutes, and the images were processed in software QGis. The photosynthetic activities in the lichens were captured and shows a decrease from the time of wetting to the time when the lichens were drying up. ?
