Title
Dataset Title Gravel Plain Pitfall Trapping Data (Namib Desert) 1976 to 2020 ?
Dataset Description The data are of tenebrionid/darkling beetles (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae) and other animals live-captured/released with pitfall traps deployed near Gobabeb (Namib-Naukluft Park) at a gravel plain site in the Central Namib in 1976 and almost continuously operated until 2020. 15 traps were placed in five groups of three, 0.4-6.75 m apart within groups, and 50-200 m between. Traps were usually cleared two to three times per week (every 2-4 days). Captured animals were released. Tenebrionid beetles (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae) are identified to species, other beetles to family, and other taxa to (sub-)order. Until 2002, taxonomically verified voucher specimens guided the identification of species. Later, a photo album of dorsal or lateral images was used as an identikit. Taxonomic coverage: 1. Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae identified to species (or genus) 2. Other families of Coleoptera identified to family 3. Other insects, arachnids and reptiles identified to order ?

Reliability Status reliable ?
Data Reliability Description Data was recorded in field books (format-free from 1976 to 2011, formatted from 2012 to 2020). These field books were scanned and digitised, recording the Site ID, date, time, trap number, species and number of specimens. Raw data was collated according to the month when traps were checked, recording taxa as written in the field books (GPrawmon.xls). GPstYear.xls contains the focal species per standard year. The summary of the data for the Gravel Plain (GP) site is as follows: Calendar months: 536 Trapping months: 502 Analytical Years: 45 No. Traps: 15 Arrangement: 5 groups of 3 Operational hrs.d-1: 24 Trap hrs.d-1: 360 Effort days: 14 757 Trap days: 205 035 Std. trap month (d): 30 Std. trap year (d): 365 Tenebrionids: 63,291 % trap mortality: 3.87 % bycatch: 26.3 max teneb/mo: 3505 min tenebs/mo: 0 mean/trap: 0.3114777 sd/trap: 0.43385405 max/trap/day: 134 date of max: 2011/06/27 ?
