Abstract |
Much of southern Africa experienced a dry rainfall season for 2022/23. Selected areas along the southern and south-eastern coast of South Africa, as well as the extreme north-west of Angola and east of Zambia had a moderately to extremely wet rainfall season. Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe had, on average, below average rainfall while South Africa had its third consecutive above-average rainfall year in 2022/23. For Namibia, the 2022/23 season was the 2nd worst rainfall year in 42 years, with only the 2018/19 season having been worse. For Botswana, it was the 2nd driest year since 1994/95.
