Abstract |
The lichen fields of the Central Namib are an often overlooked ecosystem This ecosystem does not only support a large variety of lichen species, but also various herbivore species, in particular arthropods An essential, but little understood ecosystem service of these lichen fields is carbon sequestration The lichens are however very fragile organisms, easily destroyed by recurring bergwind conditions during the winter months as well as trampling action Vehicle traffic (off road driving) has long been identified as a major cause of destruction Rehabilitation is slow, estimated to last over decades, if not centuries |
